AphroChic is The Brookladelphian’s first feature of 2016. AphroChic is made of up decorating duo (and husband and wife) Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason. They also happen to be Brookladelphians, both are from Philadelphia or the Philadelphia area and now live in Brooklyn.
The company started as a blog about eight years ago and has grown into a design company. Jeanine says AphroChic, “focuses on how to bring modern design and cultural style home.” They design home products and in 2013 they wrote a book. AphroChic's name is a play on phonetics with the PH equaling an F sound in (Afro) Aphro. It’s a nod to their Philadelphia roots which has a big influence on their style and design.
Bryan, a Ph D student, before his dive into design admits his wife is much more of an expert on design than he is, but gives valuable incite on making a home feel like it’s your own. He tells me a comfortable home should reflect the people who live there.
Their motto is clear when you take a look at the couple's apartment. Each photo, trinket, and piece of art reflects the couple's stylish and cultural tastes.
At home in Brooklyn
This design couple is from The Philadelphia area, Jeanine is from Harleysville, Pennsylvania, which is about an hour outside of Philadelphia and Bryan is from Olney, Philadelphia. They've spent time in San Fransisco and of course Philadelphia, but say Brooklyn feels like home. Don't worry, they aren't trading in Eagles' jerseys for Giants' ones.
This wouldn't be The Brookladelphian without a comparison between the cities. Especially, when one Brookladelphian mentions their favorite dining spot. This jawn happens to be run (partly) by a fellow Brookladelphian who was looking to bring a "Brookladelphia" feel to said dining spot. Talk about serendipity.
